With truck platooning, two or more vehicles are electronically coupled with one another at a close distance. The slipstream effect increases traffic safety, allows fuel saving and reduces CO2 emissions.
Together with the logistics company DB Schenker and the Fresenius University of Applied Sciences, MAN has started a development partnership with the goal of testing platooning in real-life operation in transport logistics. With test drives on the A9 between Munich and Nuremberg, the focus was on the changes and benefits for the drivers in everyday operation.

Serious rear-end collisions at moving motorway roadworks happen again and again, despite warning signs. As part of the “aFAS” research project, MAN and seven other partners developed an innovative safety vehicle which can do its job without a driver.
Within the framework of a project partnership between MAN and the company Hamburger Hafen & Logistik AG, important insights are generated into the further development of automation processes right up to a market-ready system.
Realistically analysing and validating the precise requirements of the customer’s specific application and integration of autonomously driven trucks into the fully automated container handling process – this is the objective of the partnership between MAN and logistics company Hamburger Hafen & Logistik AG as part of the “Hamburg TruckPilot” practical test. The HHLA Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA) and an approximately 70-kilometre long section of the A7 German national motorway will serve as the test environment.
Two prototype trucks fitted with corresponding electronic automation systems make the journey to the container terminal in a fully automated manner. Loading and unloading can then also be effected autonomously. A trained safety driver is present in the vehicle at all times during the trial operation to monitor the automation systems.
As with other projects, the focus is on integration of the system into concrete work processes with a future user. All findings that can be gained from the practical test are important for the further development of the technology of automated driving.
